General Information:
Lecithin is a naturally
occurring compound found in all cells in nature, plant and animal. It plays a
major role in almost all biological processes - including nerve transmission,
breathing and energy production. The word lecithin is taken from the Greek
Lekithos, which means "egg yolk". A fitting name for this essential nutrient,
for the egg is considered a symbol of life, strength and fertility. Lecithin is
important for all of these biological functions and more. Our brain is
approximately 30% Lecithin. The insulating myelin sheaths that protect the
brain, spine and thousands of miles of nerves in your body are almost two-thirds
Lecithin. Lecithin is composed of many different components, including choline,
inositol, linoleic acid, Phosphatidylserine, beneficial fatty acids, and
triglycerides. These valuable constituents of lecithin are vital for the proper
functioning of many metabolic processes. CAOH® Lecithin Granules are derived
entirely from Non-Genetically Engineered (Non-GE) soybeans that have been
Identity Preserved (IP). This guarantees that the soybeans are from seed stock
that has been certified as Non-GE.
“Nervous (brain, nerves, and
spinal chord) and circulatory (in the blood) lecithin is produced by the liver
if the diet is adequate. The trouble it that our diet is grossly deficient
in phospholipids like that found in lecithin. The phospholipids found in
lecithin are needed by every cell in the body and are a key building block of
our cell membranes; without it, they will harden and become brittle.
Lecithin also protects cells from oxidation. Oxidation is a bad thing -
it's what makes nails rust, plastic going from soft to hard, and causes skin
wrinkles.... The way I describe this to my clients is that without
lecithin, as we age, our brain and skin turns from a soft juicy plum to a hard
dry prune. This is also one of the mechanisms behind Alzheimer's -
dehydration of the brain - but instead of water evaporation, it’s "evaporation"
of phospholipids (Lecithin).” Dr. E
Dr. Johanna Budwig's Theory
about Cholesterol, Lecithin and Flax Seed Oil.
by Marcus Ettinger DC, BSc
Cholesterol is dissolved and kept in solution as a flowing liquid when there are
adequate amounts of phospholipids and specific essential fatty acids in the
blood.
Cholesterol is a waxy substance with a melting point of roughly 300 degrees
fahrenheit. The high melting point and the sticky nature of cholesterol,
allows the substance to deposit itself on our arterial walls, especially in the
presence of arterial wall injury.
When the phospholipids found in lecithin are present, the melting point of
cholesterol drops to 180 degrees - still an insoluble substance. However,
when the essential fatty acids, linoleic acid (omega-6) and more importantly
alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) are present, in sufficient quantities, the
melting point of cholesterol drops to 32 degrees, which is far below our normal
body temperature. Even in the presence of an arterial injury, cholesterol
will have a more difficult time combining with fibrin and platelets on an
injured arterial surface, because the combination of the phospholipids and
essential fatty acids have made the cholesterol in the blood more fluid and less
sticky.
Fibrin is a protein involved in the clotting of blood.
Platelets are the cell fragments circulating in the blood that are
involved in the cellular mechanisms of primary hemostasis leading to the
formation of blood clots.
Important Note:
California Academy of Health recognizes the importance of lecithin and offers
one of the industries purest and highest quality lecithin granules available. Commercially lecithin is derived from soybeans.
A concern over Genetically
Modified Organisms, soy beans being one of the number one GMO crops, has prompted California
Academy of Health to offer a 100% non-GMO lecithin, one of the first of its kind.
California Academy of Health has a strict specification on heavy metal and
microbial content. The extraction process also necessitates careful monitoring
of solvent residues, rancidity via peroxide values, moisture content, other
impurities, and phospholipid content. Our lecithin granules are 97 - 98%
phospholipids compared to the 95% seen in other brands and with a taste that
many of our customers have said they prefer over others. A fresh pleasant taste is often a tell tale sign
for purity. Rest assured that California Academy of Health will continue to work
to meet or exceed our already high standards.
