Dr. Alexis Carrel, of
the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research performed an amazing experiment
in the early 1900's. He managed to sustain the life of cells from a chicken
embryo by immersing it in a solution containing all the nutrients necessary for
life and changing the solution daily. The cells took up nutrients from the
nutrient-rich broth and excreted their wastes into the same solution. The only
thing Dr. Carrel did each day was discard the old solution and replace it with
