Vegizymes™ provide a broad-spectrum blend of vegetarian (plant based) enzymes, active in a broad pH range, to aid in food digestion. General Information

It has been well established in alternative medical circles as well as conventional medicine that digestive problems are often at the root of various illnesses. One such digestive problem is an inadequate breakdown and absorption of food derived nutrients, due to a lack of stomach HCl/pepsin and pancreatic enzymes. Enzymes are actually specialized proteins that catalyze (accelerate) chemical reactions. Enzymes are very specific and are involved in almost every chemical reaction within our cells.

There are two basic sources of supplemental enzymes. Food (plant based) enzymes and Pancreatic (animal based) enzymes. Both forms of enzymes aid and enhance digestion but facilitate that reaction in different ways. Plant based enzymes predigest the food within the stomach and can work in both an alkaline and acidic environment. Pancreatic (animal based) enzyme supplements are usually coated so that the HCl and pepsin are liberated within the stomach and the pancreatic enzyme portion is liberated within the small intestine.

The human body is capable of producing on its own approximately 22 digestive enzymes. Each is capable of either digesting protein, carbohydrates, sugars or fats. The digestive process begins first within the mouth followed by the stomach and small intestine. Throughout the digestive process specific enzymes are released and work to break down specific compounds within the food we eat.

There of four types of plant enzymes, the most important being cellulase. Plant food is a persons' only source for cellulase, as the human pancreas does not produce it. Cooking food can and often does destroy important plant enzymes as they are very sensitive to heat. Plant enzymes are also rendered useless or worse yet, destroyed by pasteurizing, canning and microwaving.

The consequences of eating a diet which is predominantly made up of cooked foods is to create a lack of adequate plant enzymes in the digestive tract, which leads to a number of conditions, one of which is inflammation in its many manifestations.

A lack of enzymes can easily lead to certain foods and proteins remaining undigested, and to remain in the bowels in the form of undigested foodstuff. As the undigested food remains in the intestines, it often stays there for lengthy periods of time, all the while decomposing into toxic materials. These toxic substances are absorbed by the blood and sent along to the liver to be detoxified. Often the liver becomes overworked and unable to properly detoxify the entire blood system, which results in toxins roaming freely throughout the body. The addition of plant enzymes will aid in the complete breakdown of the food we eat, thus allowing us to fully utilize the nutrients lock within the food.
